As we step into 2025, I’ve been reflecting on fresh starts and personal goals for the year ahead. One of my main focuses this year is to embrace sustainability, especially within my home environment. I believe that our spaces are not just about their aesthetics but also about how we maintain and care for them. Sustainability is about creating environments that support not only our lives but also the planet’s health. With that in mind, I wanted to share some ideas, personal experiences, and tips to inspire you on your journey toward a more sustainable home.

Why Sustainability Matters

Sustainable living isn’t just about big gestures—it’s about the small, consistent choices we make every day. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), about 12 million tons of furniture waste end up in landfills every year in the U.S. alone. Additionally, the World Bank reports that municipal waste is expected to increase by 70% by 2050 if current trends continue. These numbers highlight the importance of rethinking how we consume, reuse, and care for our spaces and belongings.

My commitment to sustainability will be an ongoing journey this year, and I plan to share what I learn along the way. Here are three key tips that I’m implementing in my own home and encourage you to consider as well:

1. Embrace Earth-Friendly Cleaning Products

I’ve recently started using eco-friendly cleaning products, and it’s been a surprisingly easy transition. One of my favorite discoveries is EcoNow in Anaheim, where you can refill containers with household essentials like laundry soap, hand soap, and even distilled vinegar. Not only is this approach kind to the environment, but it’s also budget-friendly.

On my first visit, I forgot to bring containers, but EcoNow had donated containers available for use, which was a pleasant surprise. I’ve since decided to bring those containers back on my next visit and start collecting more for future trips. They even offer a fantastic membership program that makes it easy to stay committed to sustainable practices. Switching to earth-friendly cleaning products has been one of the simplest and most impactful changes I’ve made so far.

2. Think Secondhand Before New

When it comes to decorating or furnishing a home, secondhand often gets overlooked in favor of shiny new pieces. While I’ve always considered secondhand for decor or furniture, I recently expanded my perspective to include everyday items. For example, I picked up a beautiful crystal dish for propagating plants, a silicone ice tray, and some new-to-me white mugs for the office (I’m starting a collection!). These treasures not only saved money but also gave a new life to items that might otherwise have been discarded. Secondhand shopping can be a fun and fulfilling way to add character and sustainability to your home.

3. Prioritize Quality Over Quantity

This is a big one for me, especially when it comes to furniture. Investing in high-quality pieces ensures that they aren’t disposable but rather items that can be repaired, refinished, or reupholstered over time. I always think about the potential for reupholstery or refinishing when I select furniture, knowing that these processes can extend the life of a beloved piece by decades. A sturdy, well-made item is not only a better investment for your wallet but also a win for the environment.

These are just a few of the steps I’m taking to make my home more sustainable in 2025. Whether it’s switching to refillable products, rethinking secondhand shopping, or prioritizing quality, the journey to sustainability is all about finding what works for you and making changes at your own pace. I’m excited to continue exploring this path and to share my experiences with you along the way. Let’s work together to make our homes a reflection of the care and responsibility we feel for our planet.

What are some sustainable practices you’ve adopted in your home? I’d love to hear your tips and ideas as we embark on this journey together!
